Department of Energy Awards Alliance for Energy Innovation $10.7 Billion to Manage National Renewable Energy Laboratory

FMG Newsroom

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recorded a definitive contract valued at approximately $10.7 billion with Alliance for Energy Innovation, LLC for the management and operation of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), according to federal contracting records on USASpending.gov.

The contract, identified as DEAC3608GO28308, covers the full scope of managing and operating NREL, the nation's primary federal laboratory dedicated to research, development, commercialization, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL is located in Golden, Colorado, and operates under the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

For federal contractors, management and operating (M&O) contracts of this scale represent some of the largest and most complex engagements in the federal contracting landscape. M&O contractors assume full responsibility for a national laboratory's workforce, facilities, safety programs, and research mission under a cost-reimbursable structure. The NREL M&O contract encompasses research activities spanning solar energy, wind power, hydrogen technologies, vehicle and fuel systems, and grid modernization.

The DOE maintains a portfolio of national laboratory M&O contracts across the country, each covering a distinct scientific mission area. NREL's focus on renewable energy and efficiency places it at the center of federal clean energy research priorities.
